Current and Recent Funerals
DR. PAUL MECRAY, JR.
Dr. Paul Mecray, Jr., 102, founder of Virtua Surgical Group and the former Chief of Surgery at Cooper University Hospital, died peacefully on Sept. 1, 2010 at Medford Leas.
Born in Camden, Dr. Mecray graduated from The William Penn Charter School, Princeton University, and University ofPennsylvania Medical School before becoming the first assistant to Doctors Charles and Will Mayo at their Mayo Clinic in RochesterMN. He subsequently joined his father’s surgical practice at Cooper University Hospital but, upon the start of World War II, Penn’s doctors formed the 20th General Hospital which served three years in India and Burma. While caring for combat casualties, Dr. Mecray won numerous awards for intelligence gathered from saving the lives of Japanese prisoners. Their devotion to his kindness led these prisoners to design airborne leaflets that produced significant surrenders despite their indoctrination that this would be unacceptable cowardice.
After the war, Dr. and Mrs. Mecray settled in Haddonfield where they lived for forty years while he assumed his father’s previous position as Chief of Surgery at Cooper Hospital. Subsequently he founded a partnership that is now the Virtua Surgical Group. He also served as President of the New Jersey Psychiatric Hospital in Trenton and later founded the New Jersey Chapter of TheAmerican College of Surgeons. While best known for life saving surgical procedures, he is remembered by thousands of less fortunate citizens who, prior to the days of Medicare or comprehensive medical insurance, received totally free surgical care.
Dr. Mecray’s wife of 71 years, Justine, passed away in 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Justine M. Opel of Albuquerque NMand son Paul M. Mecray, III of Bryn Mawr PA. A memorial service will be held at Medford Leas on Saturday, Oct. 16th, at 2:30 PM. There are truly wonderful people in the world. Norman T. Gates was one of the truly wonderful people. Norman Timmins Gates inspired everyone who knew him. He was born in October, 1914 and died in April, 2010. He grew up on a working farm south of Reading, Pennsylvania. His father was a businessman, a candy-maker. After graduating from Wyomissing High School in 1931, Norman enjoyed one year at Dickinson College before beginning work in one of his father's candy stores.

Norman was a man of love. In his poems he told us "the secret whisperings of my heart." He told us about "this love that/ Alone can light the way to darkness." and encouraged us, "Come, calls fall, dreams renew all."

After World War II, he went into the securities industry and undertook evening courses in finance at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. Bill pioneered the movement of the New York Stock Exchange firms into the South Jersey area when he opened a branch office in the Walt Whitman Hotel in Camden, NJ for Wurts, Dulles and Company in 1950. The firm was the forerunner of what ultimately became Janney Montgomery Scott. From an original three-man office in Camden, he was managing a forty-man sales office when he retired as Senior Vice President and Director in 1991. He was one of the first appointees in 1960 to the New Jersey Securities Commission and subsequently served two terms as its Chairman.
Long active in community affairs, Bill was one of the founders of the South Jersey Chamber of Commerce and served several years as Vice President. Bill was also President of the Sales and Marketing Executive Association of South Jersey and President of the Cosmopolitan Club of the Delaware Valley.
Furthering his commitment to the fields of Medicine and Science, in 1990 Bill was invited to manage the endowment fund of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (PCPM). He was later asked to serve on its Board of Trustees and eventually served as Chairman of the Board from 1992-1997. In 1998, the school showed its appreciation by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. PCPM was later merged into Temple University. She was born in the home her father built, and it was her wish to end her days there. She passed away in her bedroom surrounded by three generations of devoted family. Left to cherish her memory are her loving son, Joseph A. Moore, loving daughter and care-giver, Jayne L. Grabowski and her husband, Chuck Grabowski of Haddonfield, loving son and care-giver, Kevin L. Moore and his partner Ed Davenport of Pennsauken, loving grand-daughter and care-giver, Carly Grabowski Michaelis and her husband, Jason Michaelis, who cared for Sarah as if she was his grand-mother, loving grand-son Chas Grabowski and his fiancé Ashley McCarty, loving grand-daughter, Sarah Grabowski Brees and her husband Steve Brees and loving grand-son, Bobby Grabowski. She lost her brother when she was 15 years old, and vowed to stay by her mother, which she did until her mother passed away. Sarah was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Some of her happiest days were her four years at Haddonfield Memorial High School where she graced the halls with her sweet smile and kindness toward everyone. She was a proud graduate of the class of 1944. At five foot two with eyes of blue, she caught the eye of Haddonfield plumber, Bob Moore, and they were married in 1948. They had four children together and were married 55 years until his passing in 2003. They enjoyed many trips to Ocean City together in their "golden years". Sarah had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and therefore never had to know about the loss of her devoted husband. Her children and grand-children that she had loved and had done everything for through the years, dedicated themselves to her care. It was a long and arduous journey, with many beautiful memories along with the sad ones. She will always be remembered as a lovely lady, with a kind and generous nature, who had an enormous love for her town of Haddonfield and her family. She adored her children, and lovingly welcomed grand-children and then great grand-children. She always had an endless supply of hugs and kisses. She was still kissing us up to the end.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to anyone along the way that helped in our mother/grand-mother's care, or simply remembered her in a kind way. It will never be forgotten.
