Richter, John Groves, Sr.

Our family is sorrowed to announce that on August 4th, 2009, John Groves Richter, Senior, age 84, died suddenly while on holiday in Drogheda, Ireland.  John’s love of Ireland and its people were unparalleled, with he and his wife spending numerous holiday vacations visiting family and friends.  John was one of nine children, and grew up during the Great Depression.  One week after his 18th birthday John was drafted into military service.  He served with distinction the United States Navy and was decorated numerous times during World War II.  John served the country that he loved under heavy combat conditions in the North Atlantic, protecting merchant ships and troop transports.  His ship the USS Otter, was part of a task group that hunted and destroyed German U-Boats in the middle and north Atlantic.  On 16 January 1945, without assistance from aircraft, the group located and sank German submarine U-248.  John later served with distinction and was again decorated while working directly under Rear Admiral Jonas Ingram, Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet during the remainder of the war.  John returned from the war to finish high school and subsequently graduated from Temple High School.  Always seeking to learn and improve himself, he went on to obtain his Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration from Temple University, and later attended Wharton Business School.  As a civilian consultant, he was awarded medals from the United States Army for his assistance to military personnel during Operation Desert Storm.  He had been a member of the Thomas R. Patton Masonic Lodge, No. 659 F. & A. M. in Philadelphia and of the Artisan, Haddon Assembly # 12; where he had been a Past Master.  Additionally, Mr. Richter had been recognized in Who’sWho in the East and in the World.   He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence May (nee Clarke), their son, Dr. John Groves Richter, Jr., daughter-in-law, Dr. Adrianna Richter, twin 9-year old granddaughters, Sarah Grace and Lucille Sophia, 5 brothers and 1 sister.  Despite being subjected to the horrors of war, John returned home and was forever a kind, gentle, and loving husband and father.  He spent endless hours playing and teaching his son, with the two of them sharing countless weekends camping, fishing and just telling stories.  They were the best of friends.   Additionally, he was not only a model father, but tender loving husband and consummate provider.  Cherishing the love of his life and their warm relationship of 52 years; theirs was a bond few have or understood.  The community, America, and the world are ultimately and truly a better place thanks to a few select individuals like John.  Mr. Richter’s family will receive friends on Saturday, 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., at Grace Episcopal Church, 19 E. Kings Hwy., Haddonfield, NJ 08033.  Services will follow at 1 PM.  Interment, Haddonfield Baptist Cem.  The family has requested memorial donations in Mr. Richter’s name be made to the Church at the above address, where he had been a longtime active member.

After World War II, he went into the securities industry and undertook evening courses in finance at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. Bill pioneered the movement of the New York Stock Exchange firms into the South Jersey area when he opened a branch office in the Walt Whitman Hotel in Camden, NJ for Wurts, Dulles and Company in 1950. The firm was the forerunner of what ultimately became Janney Montgomery Scott. From an original three-man office in Camden, he was managing a forty-man sales office when he retired as Senior Vice President and Director in 1991. He was one of the first appointees in 1960 to the New Jersey Securities Commission and subsequently served two terms as its Chairman.

He was named a Life Trustee/Distinguished Fellow at Coriell. At the time of his death, he had served over fifty years on the Board having completed a five-year term as Chairman in 1990 and was the last remaining founding member.

In addition to Coriell, many professional and not-for-profit organizations benefited from the keen business acumen he honed during his career in the financial industry. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Cooper Health System and he served on the Finance Committee of Cooper Foundation. Bill was also President of the Sales and Marketing Executive Association of South Jersey and President of the Cosmopolitan Club of the Delaware Valley.

Furthering his commitment to the fields of Medicine and Science, in 1990 Bill was invited to manage the endowment fund of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (PCPM). He was later asked to serve on its Board of Trustees and eventually served as Chairman of the Board from 1992-1997. In 1998, the school showed its appreciation by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. PCPM was later merged into Temple University. Bill was also a Trustee of the Leukemia Society of Southern New Jersey. He led a full rich lifetime of commitment to South Jersey and the community in which he earned his living.

Sarah was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Some of her happiest days were her four years at Haddonfield Memorial High School where she graced the halls with her sweet smile and kindness toward everyone. They had four children together and were married 55 years until his passing in 2003. They enjoyed many trips to Ocean City together in their "golden years". Sarah had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and therefore never had to know about the loss of her devoted husband. Her children and grand-children that she had loved and had done everything for through the years, dedicated themselves to her care. It was a long and arduous journey, with many beautiful memories along with the sad ones. She will always be remembered as a lovely lady, with a kind and generous nature, who had an enormous love for her town of Haddonfield and her family. She adored her children, and lovingly welcomed grand-children and then great grand-children. She always had an endless supply of hugs and kisses. She was still kissing us up to the end.
